We are Salt and Light…what does that really mean?

Matthew 5 explains that followers of Jesus are to embody the elements of salt and light as examples of how our relationship is in this world towards humanity.

Project Initiation – Why?

What does God say about us being salt and light?

Take a look at the following declarations about who we are:

I am the salt of the earth. Matthew 5:13

I am the light of the world. Matthew 5:14

It is important to do a deep dive into why Jesus ministered to His followers that we are the salt of the earth and light in this world. There is significance in this message that we must explore. First, let’s see the foundational scripture:

Matthew 5:13-16 (GOD’S WORD Translation)

God’s People Make a Difference in the World

13 “You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, how will it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled on by people.

14 “You are light for the world. A city cannot be hidden when it is located on a hill. 15 No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket. Instead, everyone who lights a lamp puts it on a lamp stand. Then its light shines on everyone in the house. 16 In the same way let your light shine in front of people. Then they will see the good that you do and praise your Father in heaven.

We are the salt of the earth and light of the world. Both elements are vital for our human journey. Exploring the essence of Jesus message is important so that we know the significance of the relationship in both of these areas.

As we continue in our Biblical and Spiritual exploration it will be filled with great joy and revelation.

Salt and light are images used by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, one of the main teachings of Jesus on morality and discipleship. These images in Matthew 5:13, 14, 15 and 16 immediately follow the Beatitudes and are often interpreted as referring to Jesus‘ expectations of his disciples.” URL Source Link:,Jesus’%20expectations%20of%20his%20disciples.

Salt enhances the flavor of food and is used as a preservative. Salt is used in God’s covenants and as a cleansing agent.

2 Chronicles 13:5

Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?

Ezekiel 16:4 Amplified Version

And as for your birth, on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing, nor were you rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths.

Light dispels darkness and indicates that we truly are in one accord with God.

1 John 1:5-7 The Voice

What we are telling you now is the very message we heard from Him: God is pure light, undimmed by darkness of any kind. If we say we have an intimate connection with the Father but we continue stumbling around in darkness, then we are lying because we do not live according to truth. If we walk step by step in the light, where the Father is, then we are ultimately connected to each other through the sacrifice of Jesus His Son. His blood purifies us from all our sins.

On 11.15.20 The All Spice Seasoning Life Lessons from God was discussed with one of my best friends – As we traverse this life’s journey when we marinate in God’s proper season then we become elevated into a new realm or reality, accomplishment, and revelation. We are God’s Gumbo: The All Spice Lessons Learned in my travels to know God more. Below, Tosha sent a picture of the salad she put together to dive into after our conversation. She was reminded how a good seasoning enhances the tastiness of a good meal and I concurred that a well seasoned meal is one that causes you to not want to stop eating.

When you create a meal that you never want to stop eating. God desires us to be that type of “situation” in this world we are to be good as salt and a bright light that humanity doesn’t want to stop knowing about our Faither.

The Thankful Revolution rejoices with you and looks forward to continuing to encourage, edify, educate, and inspire as we traverse along our life’s pathway and choices.  Enjoy the journey!
